Philip Baneth passed from this life December 8th peacefully at his Redwood Shores home after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Cincinnati Ohio, Phil graduated with a pharmaceutical degree from the University of Cincinnati. Immediately after, he enlisted with the Army and was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, and called the Bay Area home for the rest of his days. He married Iris Gayle Jameson Baneth on February 14th, 1959 and they eventually settled in Atherton, where they raised three children. It was also at this time that Phil acquired his pharmacy in Menlo Park from Duncan McQuarrie, to whom he is eternally grateful. Baneth’s Pharmacy soon became a cornerstone of the community, where people fondly referred to him as “Dr. Baneth” or “Mr. B”. His devoted customers came to his pharmacy for the outstanding personal service and stayed for laughter and connection. After serving the community for over 45 years, he sold Baneth’s Pharmacy, which was a very difficult decision. The pharmacy was a source of great pride for him and the positive impact that he and his hardworking employees had on the Bay Area was undeniable. But, it was time for him to move onto the next chapter of his life; that next chapter was turning his focus onto his long time passion of horseracing. As he watched his dream of being in the horse racing business flourish, you can imagine how excited he was to be honored as the California Rookie Horse-Owner of the Year. For over a decade he enjoyed the thrill of being a part of this industry but when Bay Meadows closed that thrill eventually lost its luster. Once their children had settled out of state, Phil and Gayle relocated to Redwood Shores, where you could often find him at the Bay Club pumping iron, taking a few shots on the basketball court, or shooting the breeze with friends and staff about any and all sports. As an Ohio native, and despite living in the Bay Area for over 60 years, The Bengals and Reds were still his #1 teams. As with so many others, Covid isolated Phil from friends and activities. It was during that time his dauntless battle with cancer escalated and created a series of other complications. He is now reunited with his beloved wife Gayle. Phil will forever be remembered as a devoted, generous, and humble Father, Husband, Papa, Pharmacist and Friend. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Dana Jill and Matt Maley of Red Bank, New Jersey, son and daughter-in-law Robin Baneth and Lisa Ferrando of Raleigh, North Carolina, and son Kevin Baneth of Park City, Utah, and six loving grandchildren: Madison and Miranda Maley, Sofie and Julian Baneth, and Madeleine and Samantha Baneth, who will all dearly miss their Papa Phil.
