John O’Connell, passed away on December 22, 2023, with his loving daughter by his side. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mabel of 63 years, his parents Anne (Ryan) and Patrick O’Connell, and brother Michael O’Connell. John is survived by his daughter Colleen and all his extended family in Ireland and across the United States.John was born on September 17, 1925 in Gurtavalla, Doon, Co Limerick, Ireland. A member of the greatest generation, he served in the RAF during WWII and was stationed in South East Asia. He immigrated to the United States in 1950 and met his wife Mabel on a blind date in 1952. They were married in 1955 and enjoyed 63 years together. They enjoyed traveling to Europe along with their many trips to Ireland. John joined IBM in 1956 when they opened the San Jose plant and retired after 32 years of service.A passionate golfer, John was a member of Pasatiempo Golf Club for over 30 years. He achieved three holes in one, but was most proud of his Double Eagle/Albatross on hole number 11 at Santa Teresa Golf Course. He was featured in Frank Freeman’s column in the Mercury News, March of 1966, as the first person to achieve this on that hole. His golf clubs accompanied him on his travels not only within the United States but also to favorite courses in Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand.A memorial service will be held on February 24, 2024, at 11:00 am, at Darling Fischer Funeral Home, 231 E. Campbell Ave. Campbell.
